Kick into fitness with Cardio Kickboxing!
Cardio kickboxing, one of the hottest fitness trends to hit gyms in recent years, is quickly replacing
step aerobics and indoor cycling as the most popular fitness class in gyms across the nation. Spurred on by the success of Billy Blanks’ Tae-Bo video workout, cardio kickboxing and other martial arts-inspired workouts are motivating many people to get off the couch and into a fitness program.
A hybrid form of boxing, martial arts and aerobics, cardio kickboxing is an intense total-body workout. Well-known as an excellent form of stress release, martial arts-inspired workouts also improve strength, aerobic fitness and flexibility. The variety of movements used in kickboxing can sharpen reflexes and improve coordination and balance.
The basic class format: a series of drills set
to music including shadow boxing, various types of kicks, push-ups, jump rope, jumping jacks, shuffling, and
punching/kicking combinations. In some classes, the instructor will use props such as jump ropes, gloves, and speed
bags, and in others everything is simulated. Unlike typical aerobics classes, there is no complicated choreography
to grasp or intricate routines to commit to memory. What's more, most classes change from week to week, so
you're always challenged and never bored.
How to Be Safe
MAS offers cardio kickboxers these safety tips:
- Go Slow, Low and Easy With Kicks and Punches. Whatever you do, don't start throwing full kicks and punches in your first class. Progress slowly and keep your kicks low, especially on side kicks and roundhouses. Don't overextend your kicks or lock your joints. Remember, kicks are weapons to the lower body and punches are weapons to the face. Don't act as if you were kicking at an opponent's head - you're kicking at the legs.
- Don't Do More Than Three Cardio Kickboxing Workouts per Week. If you want to have longevity in the sport, start with only one workout per week and gradually build up to no more than three (unless you're also doing some other form of martial arts training or sport-specific strength training).
- Allow Yourself to Be a Beginner. Take rest/water breaks during class if you feel fatigue setting in.
- Include Strength and Stability Training in Your Fitness Regimen. The MAS gym is the perfect place to supplement weight training with your cardio fitness.
- Don’t Ignore Your Feet. Consider jump rope drills or other Forms of floor work to strengthen your feet for the specific demands of cardio kickboxing. Your shoes need to be designed for pivots and lateral movement.
- Always Warm Up. Your warm-up should be specific to the class and should include static and dynamic stretching with some kicks and light punches.
- Cross Train With Contrasting Activities. Complement your kickboxing program with non- or lower-impact, more linear forms of exercise-such as indoor stationary cycling, walking and hiking.
- Try Traditional Martial Arts Training at the Martial Arts Studio. This will allow you to learn at a slower pace and practice proper technique--both of which are especially important if you are new to exercise.
- Visit a class session! Not sure about the whole cardio kickboxing thing? Watch a session in the MAS viewing room. Class take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
