Young Adult Karate

I think it would be a massive understatement to say the world of Martial Arts has influenced my life greatly. It is because of the self confidence I gained from the teachings of karate that I was able to push myself into things that I never thought I was capable of. For instance getting my first job at thirteen years old, joining the football team in Junior High, and funding my way through Art School by taking the initiative to compete for and obtain various scholarships.

As the son a single mom, it wasn't very easy growing up in Cocoa, FL. I quickly developed a lot of anger and resentment. I seemed to lash out at my teachers in particular. I was a sneaky kid, but nothing got past my mom, even me forging her name on a discipline notice sent home by my teacher. She realized I needed something positive in my life. I needed something that could help instill SELF discipline. I basically needed something fun in my life that could make me a more respectful child but could also teach me to stand up for myself. Karate!

I guess the thing I admired most was Mr. Smith wasn't just some teacher standing around telling you what to do, he trained with you, showed you, and no matter how mad you made him, he never gave up on you. If you wanted to learned bad enough, he wanted you to learn even more. Thanks to the confidence and self discipline I gained through karate, I managed not only do better in school, but maintained a part time job all through High School as well as play football and train in Karate.

Since 2003 I have worked as an assistant instructor, and graphic designer for The Michael A. Smith Martial Arts Studio. I enjoy sharing the knowledge that has helped me so much with other kids who need it just as much. I have been in the world of Martial Arts for 22 years and thank God, my family, and karate family for making me what I am today.

The young adult program is for children ages 7 - 15 years. At the Martial Arts Studio, we believe that developing and maintaining a sound body and mind are critical to getting the most out of life. In our Young Adult program, you will experience a unique approach to self-defense and exercise designed to benefit all areas of your life.

Our goal is to create an environment that gives each individual the opportunity to pursue and achieve a greater level of personal success and freedom. Flexibility will be enhanced through a gradual building process of safe and easy stretching techniques. Most students notice improvements in weight reductions as well as improved toning and strengthening of muscles.

The Traditional Karate aspect of our this class covers classical stances, punches, blocks, kicks, Katas (choreographed martial forms), and concentrates on developing form and the characteristic Karate "snap" and power. The stances and precise movements build strength, stamina, focus, breath control, balance, and coordination. This training also builds a great foundation for other physical activities and athletics, as it helps foster a deep grounding in movement.
